🏊 Winter Pool Temperatures – FAQ
❄️ Q: Why is the pool temperature lower during winter?
A: During Winter 2024, we identified two primary reasons for lower water temperatures:
-
🌙 Overnight Heat Loss: Being an outdoor facility, the outdoor 50m pool loses significant heat overnight.
-
⚙️ Heat Pump Limitations: When air temperatures drop below 4°C, our heat pumps enter a defrost cycle, reducing their heating capacity.
We’ve observed that when overnight temperatures fall to 1–2°C, pool temperatures also dip. If overnight temperatures stay above 5°C, the pool typically remains stable.
We are actively monitoring conditions and exploring ways to minimise fluctuations and improve your experience.
🔧 Q: What are you doing to maintain pool temperatures?
A: We're implementing a range of strategies:
-
🛡️ Pool Covers: Used nightly to retain heat and reduce energy use.
-
📆 Schedule Adjustments: Trialling temporary closures and revised operating hours for the outdoor pool to conserve warmth.
Despite these efforts, extreme cold requires more energy than expected to sustain set temperatures.
⚠️ Q: What happens if there are issues with the heat pumps?
A: Occasionally, heat pumps may experience faults, especially during periods of high demand in colder weather. This can lead to a temporary reduction in water temperature.
When this happens, our team acts immediately by working with our service partners to restore normal function. In many cases, faults are minor and quickly resolved, allowing temperatures to recover promptly.
📣 Q: What actions have been taken to address the issue so far?
A: We’re keeping customers informed with up-to-date pool temperature displays located in the centre lobby, this FAQ, and ongoing digital communication. Though we aim to maintain set temperatures, colder nights may still result in temporary dips.
🕒 Q: When will the temperature issues be resolved?
A: The temperature challenges—particularly in the outdoor 50m pool—will not be fully resolved during Winter 2025. We are continuing to work with our contractors and the council toward long-term solutions.
📈 Q: Are long-term solutions being considered?
A: Yes. The Draft 2025/26 Council Budget includes allocated funding to address these temperature issues sustainably. 💡
📆 Q: Will indoor lane space be affected during winter?
A: Yes. If the outdoor 50m pool becomes too cold, swim squads may be relocated indoors. At least two lanes will remain available in the indoor 25m pool during swim lesson times to maintain access. 🏊♀️
⏰ Q: When are the peak indoor pool hours?
A: The busiest times are typically weeknights between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm, especially during swim squads and lessons. For a quieter experience, consider visiting outside these hours. 📅
🌡️ Q: Why does the warm water pool feel cold sometimes?
A: The indoor warm water pool remains at 34°C. However, prolonged use and cold ambient temperatures can affect how warm the water feels to the body. This is a normal sensation.
🧼 Q: Do these issues affect pool safety or cleanliness?
A: Not at all. ✅ We continue to uphold strict health and safety standards. Water quality and cleanliness are not compromised by temperature fluctuations.
🎯 Q: What is the target temperature for the pools?
A: Our aim is to maintain consistent and comfortable temperatures across all pools. Below are the target temperatures for each:
Indoor 25m Pool: 27°C
Outdoor 50m Pool: 26°C
Indoor Warm Water Pool (WWP): 34°C
Indoor Learn to Swim (LTS) Pool: 32°C
💰 Q: Can I receive a refund due to cooler pool temperatures?
A: While we understand the concern, we are unable to offer refunds. All pools remain operational, and we are taking every possible step to address the issue. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
✉️ Q: How can I provide feedback or report temperature concerns?
A: We welcome your feedback! 🙏 Please speak to our customer service team at reception or contact us via email. Your input helps us continuously improve.
