Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre (NARC) is pleased to announce a significant enhancement to our safety protocols. We are currently installing an AI-assisted drowning-prevention system designed to provide an additional layer of protection and support our lifeguard team in detecting early signs of swimmer distress.
Enhancing Response Times
In aquatic environments, drowning incidents can occur rapidly and silently. This advanced technology assists our safety team by:
Analyzing movement patterns within the water in real-time.
Issuing immediate alerts to lifeguards when a situation requires assessment.
Empowering faster intervention during critical moments, supporting safer outcomes for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
The Role of Our Lifeguards
It is important to emphasise that this technology does not replace our human lifeguards.
Lifeguards remain fully responsible for active supervision and all safety-related decision-making.
The system does not take independent action; it serves as a sophisticated information tool to support human judgment.
As with all NARC initiatives, our staff remain at the heart of our safety operations.
Commitment to Privacy
We recognise the importance of community privacy. This system is strictly a safety tool and has been configured with the following protections:
No Identification: The system does not identify individual swimmers.
No Facial Recognition: Facial recognition technology is not utilized.
No Personal Data: The system does not collect names, contact details, or personal information.
No Behavioral Monitoring: It does not monitor the social behavior of staff or patrons.
Focus: The technology tracks water movement only, not the identity of the individual.
Operational Impact
Members and visitors will experience no change to their regular use of the facility.
The system operates discreetly in the background.
Lessons, lap swimming, and recreational programs will continue as normal.
Full staff training and rigorous internal testing will be completed before the system becomes operational to ensure a seamless integration.
National Standards and Safety
This technology is part of a broader commitment to community wellbeing. Similar systems are currently utilized in over 75 public aquatic centres across Australia, facilitated through a national partnership with Royal Life Saving Australia.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NARC installing surveillance or facial recognition?
No. The system is designed solely to detect water distress. It does not utilize facial recognition, identify individuals, or monitor general behavior.
Why is this technology being introduced?
Drowning incidents can be difficult to detect in high-use environments. Evidence indicates that this technology can assist lifeguards in responding up to six times faster during water safety emergencies.
Are swimmers or staff being recorded/monitored?
No. The system does not collect personal identifiers (names or faces). Furthermore, it is not a performance management tool; it does not monitor lifeguard scanning or staff behavior.
Is this technology common in Australia?
Yes. Similar water-safety systems are active in more than 75 public facilities across Victoria and interstate, supported by Royal Life Saving Australia.
When will the system become operational?
Installation: Commences 10th March.
Go-Live Date: 13th April.
Prerequisites: The system will only be activated once staff training, internal testing, and community information phases are complete.
